Zum Hauptinhalt

The action in Cabaret originally takes place in Berlin just before Hitler and the Nazis come to power. Unemployment is high and many are poor. But the nightlife in the city is thriving.

At the Kit Kat Club, skilled and daring cabaret artists work, entertaining the audience with song and dance. Here, emcee Emzee runs the show, and the club's trophy is the artist Sally Bowles. She is an outrageous diva who captivates both the audience and the men she meets on her way. An unemployed English writer comes to town, and when he meets Sally Bowles at the Kit Kat Club, they quickly become a couple.

But there are dark forces emerging in the society they live in. Many are seduced by Nazism and Hitler, and a few years later he comes to power in Germany. So even though the artists at the Kit Kat Club cultivate joy and freedom, this place is also infiltrated by the new ideology.

In our version of Cabaret, time and place are open. This means that the play takes place in our time. With references to the world we live in today. Now democracy is again at risk, and conservative right-wing forces are on the rise. The play tells of an ideology that believes some people are more valuable than others. That there are minorities who are pests to the majority, and therefore should be removed. And that the fight for a strong nation is more important than the human dignity of those who stand out from the norm. It can be sexual orientation, race or gender.
