Caitlin Cook comes to USF Verftet with the international success The Writing on the Stall – a production with an expression that sits at the intersection of stand-up, music, theatre and visual art.
LA-born and New York-based Cook has built a name as one of the most distinctive voices in musical comedy. With a background from Oxford and a wide-ranging artistic practice that includes among other things writing, directing and producing, she is known for pushing genre boundaries and creating productions where humour and music receive equal billing.
On 17 October Caitlin Cook visits USF Verftet with The Writing on the Stall – the critically acclaimed musical comedy that has filled houses Off-Broadway, on tour in the USA and most recently at Edinburgh Fringe.
The production unfolds in a worn-out bar bathroom, where graffiti from the walls becomes original songs, comic stories and surprisingly tender observations. With equal parts stand-up, concert and theatre, Cook takes audiences on a personal, intimate and hilariously funny journey through human vulnerability, shame, desire and community.
The crude, moving and absurd messages from the toilet stalls serve as guides throughout the production – and become an unexpected starting point for exploring what we have in common and what we owe each other.
The Writing on the Stall is a distinctive and unpredictable production for everyone who enjoys humour with both heart, bite and a low threshold for the inappropriate. When Caitlin Cook takes over USF Verftet on 17 October, audiences can expect an evening where sharp observations, musical abundance and unexpected stories meet on the same stage.
