Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni has been a popular opera ever since its world premiere in Rome in 1890, and has a large following among opera lovers worldwide. The same applies in Bergen.
The award-winning work has a story that unfolds with temperament and dramatic build-up, and this gives the music powerful choral movements, folk-inspired melody and gripping solo parts. The magnificent «Intermezzo» is worth attending this production for alone, and in addition you get the mighty Easter chorus.
The story is universal and still highly relevant, and this time you can experience the opera in a raw, realistic setting at Maskinhallen at Laksevåg. Iano Tamar returns in the role of Santuzza, and Tone Kvam Thorsen sings Mama Lucia.
Opera Bergen has in previous productions of Cavalleria Rusticana received glowing reviews: «a vibrating musical force and will to create something fundamental from the stage that was notably present». The force, the will and the ability are continually renewed by changing times, and the story is told with our era's complexity, challenges and opportunities as the interpretive framework.
