The time has come to create a new Christmas tradition—one where people can relax and momentarily set aside the stress of gifts, food, and logistics. Everyone is invited to Christmas Dinner!
The show has played to full houses at the National Theatre's various stages, and now it’s finally Stavanger and Rogaland Theatre's turn! The table is set on the Main Stage, bring out the Christmas platters and our finest china, and the city’s citizens are welcomed to a festive meal with the venerable Stavanger family, the Berges!
Theatre rocker Gard B. Eidsvold, together with Statsteatret, has covered 1000 years of Norwegian history in his very unique way. This makes him well-equipped to take the director’s chair as a hundred years of Christmas dinners unfold on the Main Stage in one evening.
In Christmas Dinner, the audience is confronted with most of the typical Christmas family scenes.
From the perfectly placed almond in the porridge to the childhood story that grows funnier every year, retold to roaring laughter, to the aunt with a dark past, the drunken father, and the mother who hushes all conflict. Add each new generation’s shockwaves—be it breastfeeding or swearing at the table.
Christmas Dinner is a delightful carousel of generational shifts, where we witness how the Berge family is shaped by their relationships. We start in 1915 and follow them through WWII, the rise of social democracy, and the oil age—right up to the present.
Prosperity, war, bankruptcy, and oil adventure are all portrayed with wit and insight in this miniature history of Norway.
