Today’s fiscal and monetary policies do not address the green transition, according to economist Ann Pettifor. In her 2019 book, The Case for the Green New Deal, she argues that far-reaching economic reforms are necessary to rapidly decarbonise advanced economies such as Norway. Her solution is nationally anchored fiscal policy in which the state actively directs credit and capital flows, rather than leaving the transition to ‘footloose’ global finance.
Through more democratic monetary control and public credit, funds can be channelled towards green industry and labour-intensive sectors that create security and employment. We invite Ann Pettifor to present the case for a new Green Deal. Afterwards, we will discuss the scope for this approach in Norway and the Nordic countries with the following panellists:
Chair: Kari Elisabeth Kaski, Director of the Alm Centre for Economic Policy.
Ann Pettifor, economist, author and one of the architects of the Green New Deal concept.
Katinka Holtsmark, economist and researcher at the University of Oslo.
A collaborative event with the Alm Centre for Economic Policy.
