Johan Sara Jr., widely recognised as a prominent and influential voice in contemporary Sámi music, comes to Borealis to present the first live performance of his chamber music work The Eight Sámi Seasons.
This work presents an expressive sonic journey through the eight distinct seasons of Sámi culture. In contrast to the familiar four seasons of the Western calendar, the Sámi year unfolds through a much more nuanced cycle shaped by the movements of the reindeer herd and the rhythms of traditional reindeer husbandry.
Each season carries specific responsibilities for the herders, from spring migration to the quiet endurance of winter, and Sara's composition is deeply rooted in this lived experience, reflecting nature itself. The shifting landscapes, elemental forces, and the seasonal cycle draw listeners into a sound world that reconnects them with the slow rhythms of nature and invites quiet reflection.
Performers, the Japanese pianist Marina Matsuoka and the chamber ensemble Bergen Strings, contribute their own distinctive artistry to the work. Together, they realise Sara's musical vision, blending tradition, innovation, and the rhythms of northern Norway into an immersive concert experience.
Presented in Troldsalen at Troldhaugen — the former home of Edvard and Nina Grieg — the concert situates Sara's work within a space long shaped by listening, reflection, and musical thought.
