Edén/Kvifte/Nesheim Trio
Mats Edén and Tellef Kvifte have helped shape the development of ensemble traditions in Swedish and Norwegian folk music since the 1970s. Both learned from the old masters while also drawing on backgrounds in avant-garde music and a wide range of other genres from the 1970s onwards. In Norway, Tellef was a member of the influential group Slinkombas, while across the border Mats performed with Groupa. Both ensembles explored new approaches to traditional music and ensemble playing at a time when very few musicians were experimenting in this way.
The trio you will hear tonight focuses on repertoire from Värmland in Sweden and Agder in Norway. The traditional tunes provide a framework for variation and improvisation, but they may also dissolve completely if the musical energy takes over. On drums and percussion, they are joined by a younger-generation musician. Knut Kvifte Nesheim is an eclectic performer whose musical language is every bit as broad as that of his fellow musicians, moving effortlessly between contemporary music, folk music and jazz.
After the concert, the dance floor will be open into the early hours.
