Groven had particularly interesting ideas regarding tonality and traditional music. Rather than viewing tonality through the lens of the European classical 12-tone system – in which most pitches in folk music sounded out of tune – Groven believed that just intonation was a far superior tool. In this system, the distinctive traditional tonal language is expressed as simple ratios rather than deviations. Just intonation is based on the natural scale.
These ideas remain highly controversial. They are generally rejected by the folk music academy, but embraced by many traditional musicians. Groven was first and foremost a folk musician himself, and sought to develop a theory based on his tacit traditional knowledge.
On this occasion, we are delighted to invite you to an evening where we can immerse ourselves in just-intoned tones from the organ and guitar, listen to the evocative strumming of the Hardanger fiddle and dance our way into the dawn.
The duo Seamus Cater and Fredrik Rasten will perform a work that explores the sonic possibilities of the just-intoned system. Amsterdam-based Seamus Cater has built an acoustic organ capable of retuning and microtonal scales. Berlin-based Fredrik Rasten has written a new composition which will receive its world premiere this evening. The piece takes its starting point in the sounds and pitches of folk music.
Helga Myhr is releasing her second solo album this year! And it’s high time she returned to Stavanger! The material on this album consists of folk tunes based on several of the key sources in Hallingdal, such as Kristian Øvrevollseie, Sevat Sataøen, Olav Sataslåtten and Engebret Ødegård. Helga focuses on tunes and tune forms that are rarely used today, and at this concert she will showcase tunes she has worked on from her childhood right up to the present day.
After the concert, the dance floor will be open as usual!
