GRETHE UNSTAD: Undertoner
The artist writes: I work with painting using water-based techniques, such as tempera and more recently also watercolour.
The luminosity and colouring of colour are central to my works. Tempera and watercolour give a very clarity and richness to the colour, and a sense of space arises in the colour surface itself that I do not achieve in the same way using other painting media.
I use simple compositions so that colour can take centre stage. Through the painterly process I tune the colour tones against each other until I achieve the desired expression and the picture surface becomes «self-supporting».
In the paintings there is a tension between the transparent and the opaque. This gives a dynamic and an interplay to the colour expression and composition, and the picture surfaces appear to breathe with life.
I strive for a stillness and tension in the expression in individual works, between the various works, between the various expressions and in how the paintings relate to the exhibition space.
