• At the close of the 10th century, Christ Church was erected as the first building on Holmen, alongside a bishopric and monastery.
• In the early 12th century, the royal residence was constructed in wood, and by the 1200s, it was transformed into a grand stone building by King Håkon Håkonsson.
• Magnus Lagabøte, son of Håkon, built the fortress by the sea in 1270 – today, part of the Rosenkrantz Tower.
• In the 1500s, the royal residence was converted into Bergenhus Fortress, marking a shift in its purpose.
• After centuries of neglect and use as storage space, restoration work began in the 19th century, and following an explosion in 1944, it was painstakingly restored to its current magnificent state.
