Merete Mowinckel is a Norwegian fine artist based in Bergen. She holds a Master’s degree from the Bergen National Academy of the Arts (KHiB) and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
Her work grows out of a long attentiveness to people, places, and quiet moments of presence. Alongside her artistic education, many years of working in palliative and geriatric care have shaped a practice grounded in listening, patience, and respect for what unfolds slowly.
Mowinckel creates figurative, dream-like images that remain open and approachable.
Working with drawing, painting, photography, and digital processes, she brings many elements together and refines them carefully, seeking balance rather than emphasis. She often describes her process as tuning images—listening for when the work appears whole. Her images invite connection across age and background, and are made with the hope that viewers may recognize something familiar, calm, or quietly meaningful.
Mowinckel has held several solo exhibitions in Norway, including Geilo Cultural Church (2020), Presttun, Ustaoset (2021), and Skrivergaarden, Nordfjordeid (2022). In February 2026, she presents the solo exhibition Harmonium, a body of work focused on balance, resonance, and visual listening. Her work has also been shown internationally at the Arte Laguna Prize, Venice (2024) and the London Biennale (2025).
Since 2020, she has run her own independent gallery in the historic center of Bergen. She lives and works in Bergen, Norway.
