Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut is a strange, ambitious and funny film
Theatre director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) has great success, but it is overshadowed by low self-esteem, a mysterious nervous condition, fear of death and a faltering marriage. In the middle of the chaos he is working on an enormous theatre piece about his own life, a project that grows to unforeseen dimensions in time and scope. Eventually several thousand people are involved in the piece, and the sets are so monumental that they form their own city where everyone lives. Slowly fiction and reality merge together.
