Frank Capra's classic tale of the honest, ordinary person
George Bailey has sacrificed his own dreams to take over the family savings bank after his father's death. The job and a modest income make him increasingly disillusioned over the years, and he also comes under suspicion for financial crimes. The shame and despair bring him to the brink of suicide. Not only friends must contribute to change his mind, even angels must intervene for him to realise that life is wonderful.
The film had its premiere at Christmas 1946, but was not a success. People found it too depressing. Through an administrative oversight the rights were not renewed when they expired in the 1970s. It became public property, something TV stations in the USA made ample use of. That is how the film gained classic status.
