Grieg’s villa opens briefly to be filled with music.

“She plays with power and authority,” wrote The Guardian when 20-year-old Jeneba Kanneh-Mason made her solo debut at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. When the opportunity arose to play on Edvard Grieg’s piano in the villa at Troldhaugen, the pianist was delighted.

Kanneh-Mason is dedicated to bringing music to light that is not widely known. For the pianist’s Festival concerts in Håkonshallen and Grieg’s villa, she will perform, among other works, Fantasie Nègre by Florence Price, the first African-American woman to have her music performed by major symphony orchestras. Also on the programme is William Grant Still’s Summerland, alongside a lyrical piece by Grieg and classics by Bach, Beethoven and Chopin.

The Festival concerts in Grieg’s villa are a cherished tradition, and in collaboration with Kode, the house will open exclusively for two concerts during the renovation, while it stands empty.

There will also be an extra concert in Grieg’s villa with pianist Alexander Gadjiev during this year’s Festival, on Friday 29 May.
