FEAT. HILDEGUNN ØISETH
One might be tempted to call the German pianist Julia Hülsmann an ECM veteran, after having released several albums of delicate, atmospheric jazz in various constellations on the record label. With an approach to the music deeply inspired by the post-bop tradition, while also glancing sideways at for example modern pop music, you get a mixture of living, organic jazz that pleases and moves. There is plenty of room in the music for expressive solos, but also space to show the quartet's telepathic interplay.
Julia Hülsmann Quartet is this year in the spotlight with the new release «Under the Surface» on ECM, where the quartet is also expanded with Hildegunn Øiseth on bukkehorn and trumpet. As on previous releases all members of the quartet contribute music to the recording, and the bandleader herself is behind half of the material on the album. Saxophonist Uli Kempendorff's entry into Julia's trio on «Not Far From Here» from 2019 added a new dimension to the musical dynamics and interplay, something that is further enhanced by Hildegunn Øiseth's contributions on five of the songs on the new album. Enchanting lyricism, rhythmics and melodic interaction otherwise characterise the music on «Under The Surface», and yet another solid contribution to Julia Hülsmann's increasingly impressive ECM catalogue.
