In 2026, Kanaan celebrates 10 years as a band with its tenth album, simply titled Kanaan. It felt natural for the album to be self-titled, as it is built upon the very solid musical foundation the band has created over a decade. And that foundation rumbles strongly. With Kanaan, we are approaching an earthquake.
With their grand and eclectic new album, Kanaan digs even deeper into the different styles that together have made up their music. The melodic sections have strong sing-along qualities, the psychedelic sections are more far-out, and the retro and analog sounds are vintage and unpolished. And when it comes to riffs, there has been no slimming treatment here; they are heavier than ever.
Although the band continues to evolve, the now distinctive Kanaan sound remains well preserved. The band says the album is a celebration of everything they have achieved musically and artistically so far, but also everything they have experienced and accomplished as close friends playing together.
The band members have had time to become more grown up, but their musical curiosity, creativity, and desire to create remain as strong as ever. The willingness to truly immerse themselves in music in the studio, day and night, to play, jam, compose, and really live inside it, is still there. They describe their studio stay at Athletic Sound in Halden as a kind of black hole where the only things that existed were the band, engineer Dag Erik Johansen, and the music.
The members of Kanaan already keep busy with frequent touring and annual album releases. Even so, they find time for countless side projects. The trio also meets in the expanded orchestra Full Earth, where they perform music written by drummer and composer Ingvald André Vassbø. Vassbø also plays with the experimental psych/free-jazz project Sex Magick Wizards and has in recent years filled in for Motorpsycho.
Bassist Eskild Myrvoll plays aggressive bass in the hardcore band Daufødt and, until recently, in the extreme metal band Blodkvalt, while guitarist Ask Vatn Strøm long played cheerful and groovy jazz-influenced indie music with ¡BangBang Watergun! as well as blues with Soft City. In the dream-pop band Cloud Cuckoo, Ask is still active as the group's lead guitarist. Together, all these side projects form a highly eclectic mix that showcases the musicians' versatility and hints at where Kanaan draws its inspiration from.
Kanaan will be released on Jansen Records on October 16. On December 4, Kanaan returns to Folken.
