Zum Hauptinhalt

Kapittel presents a dance workshop offering a fun and accessible introduction to posing, catwalk, attitude and simple movements inspired by ballroom and vogue culture. No previous experience is required – just curiosity, energy and a willingness to give it a go. The workshop concludes with a short routine, and anyone who wishes is welcome to perform it in the foyer at Sølvberget.

Ball culture is a subculture created by the Black and Latin American LGBTQ+ community. Balls served as safe spaces where marginalised young people could express themselves, compete and celebrate their identities through dance, fashion and voguing. During a time marked by racism, homophobia and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, they also became important spaces for pride, empowerment and solidarity. They were important then, and they remain important today.

The workshop is led by Valentina Martinès Mariscal, Director of Rogaland Art Centre. Originally trained in Mexico as a dancer and dance teacher, Mariscal has extensive experience teaching a wide range of dance styles.

The event forms part of Kapittel – Stavanger International Festival for Literature and Freedom of Expression, taking place from 16–20 September 2026. More information, the full programme and tickets are available at www.kapittel.no.

Please note that photographs and video may be taken at selected events at Sølvberget and during the Kapittel Festival for documentation and use on social media.
