In this illustrated lecture, Thea Selliaas Thorsen takes the audience into one of the most fascinating and unsettling stories from classical antiquity. The myth of the nymph Io explores some of the central themes of Greco-Roman mythology: desire, power and transformation. Drawing on examples from art and literature, Thorsen shows how the myth of Io has been reinterpreted through the centuries and why it continues to resonate today.
Thea Selliaas Thorsen was awarded the Norwegian Critics’ Prize in 2025 for her acclaimed translation of Ovid’s ancient masterpiece, Metamorphoses. Thorsen is a philologist and Professor of Classical Studies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
