Zum Hauptinhalt

It has become an accepted truth: as the population ages, the need for staff in the health and care sector will become so great that it is difficult to see how the demand can be met. This is supported by recent projections from Statistics Norway.

But is that really the case?

Will tomorrow’s older people be healthier than today’s, allowing them to live independently for longer without extensive care? Could technology, better organisation and more care provided at home mean that fewer staff are needed than Statistics Norway predicts? And could the lifestyle changes seen among adults today lead to a different development in dementia than current projections suggest?

Erling Holmøy, co-author of the Statistics Norway report, meets Civita adviser Steinar Juel for a head-to-head debate. Juel is a former chief economist at Nordea and has previously worked at, among others, Norges Bank and the Ministry of Finance.
