Zum Hauptinhalt

The quintet consists of some of the city's most sought-after musicians: bassist Anna Butterss (Jason Isbell, Phoebe Bridgers, Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker), synth experimenter Jeremiah Chiu (Ariel Kalma, Marta Sofia Honer), saxophonist Josh Johnson (Meshell Ndegeocello, Leon Bridges, Carlos Niño), percussionist Booker Stardrum (Photay, Lisel, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma), and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann (Perfume Genius, Meg Duffy, Tasha).

The band's debut album Small Medium Large was recorded live during their very first concerts at the cult venue ETA in Highland Park in 2023. The album was released in the summer of 2024 to widespread critical acclaim and landed on numerous "Best of 2024" lists.

In the fall of 2025, they will release their second album, How You Been, followed by a series of concerts that will extend into 2026. In March of the same year, they will be named artists in residence at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, where they will play three consecutive nights at the internationally renowned festival for creative music.

SML combines an explosive collective energy with intricate compositions and a raw improvisational nerve. The result is music that is both dreamy, rhythmically intense and unexpected – a band in rapid growth, with a sound that is all its own.

This will be a concert experience for anyone who wants to hear where modern jazz is headed right now.
