On a very low budget and with an attitude that said anything was allowed, "À bout de souffle" emerged from the editing table like a breath of fresh air and put an end to the most important year in post-war film history – 1959. Based on a banal crime story (found in a small newspaper article by François Truffaut), Godard had created a formally revolutionary film and helped define ‘la nouvelle vague’. Breathless became a sensation in France and, to everyone's surprise, also a box office success. Godard quickly gained godlike status among cineastes and other film buffs.
