Zum Hauptinhalt

This documentary paints a vivid and powerful portrait of Tamara de Lempicka, one of the most glamorous and enigmatic artists of the Art Deco era. The film follows her from her aristocratic upbringing and revolutionary Russia to the decadent glamour of Paris in the 1920s and 30s, and on to her escape from Nazism and a new life in the United States. Through previously unpublished archive material, interviews and close studies of her paintings, we discover an artist who always created on her own terms: courageous, ambitious and groundbreaking.

The documentary highlights both the person behind the myth and shows how her uncompromising style and vitality made her an icon. With Lempicka's elegant portraits, sensual nude studies and images of the upper class and female liberation as a visual framework, the film shows how Lempicka transformed the upheavals, sorrows and triumphs of her life into art. The result is a gripping story of survival, rebirth and the enduring power of art.

The series ‘Art on Film’ presents a varied selection of feature films and documentaries that take us on a journey through art and art history. The films are presented and curated in collaboration with The Art Trotter, a digital art club that makes art easy, understandable and fun for most people.
