Set in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp during the Second World War, the film follows British prisoners who are despised for allowing themselves to be captured rather than choosing suicide. David Bowie was widely praised for his powerful screen presence, alongside Ryūichi Sakamoto, who also composed the film’s atmospheric score. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival.
