STAVANGER DOOM CHURCH presents Music for Weddings and Funerals
Hellishly pretentious and heavenly sonorous, or painful as a year of misery? It took an age just to arrange this work down to a vinyl-friendly 40 minutes. The working title reflects a clear A/B-side theme, in which the primal darkness of the opening sections tears apart in a cataclysmic “Let there be light!” before moving towards a series of ascending final verses, all spun around the fundamental notes A, C and E.
This, too, is how we might define the sublime: the beauty of contemplating the abominable from a reassuring distance. The musical language draws heavily on Dylan Carlson’s epic Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version (1993). Slayer and Black Sabbath naturally follow. Drones and riffs in perfect harmony.
We have expanded the percussion into full-blown orchestral percussion, made possible by veteran Frode Gundersen. It is therefore only fitting that we open with Plague Master, which was started with the same gentleman in the mid-1990s and completed during the most recent pandemic. Doom takes time.
Music for Weddings and Funerals will be uploaded to SoundCloud either shortly before or shortly after the concert, depending a little on what the Congregation requires. You will be able to sign up to a T-shirt mailing list before the concert.
