In late summer 2026, Stavanger Symfoniorkester and pianist Christian Ihle Hadland will embark on one of music’s most beautiful journeys. All of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s piano concertos are to be recorded in full. The project will take several years, and those who still keep CD collections should make room for 8–10 albums.
The first recording week begins after the chamber music festival, and what could be better than inviting Stavanger’s music-loving residents to a dress rehearsal during the festival itself? Audiences will hear Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, one of the most beloved works in the repertoire, alongside the majestic “Coronation” Concerto. Had the latter been Mozart’s only piano concerto, it would likely have become one of the most frequently performed works ever written — but Mozart had a habit of outdoing himself. The composition process moved so quickly that he never managed to write down parts of the piano score, though one would never guess it. The music flows effortlessly and beautifully, as it always does with Mozart.
There will also be a touch of opera to prepare for the piano concertos: the gentle Emperor Titus pursued by the daughter of his enemy, and Don Giovanni with the devil himself lurking in the shadows.
