Esa-Pekka Salonen composed Sinfonia concertante at the request of, among others, organ virtuoso Iveta Apkalna. The work premiered in January 2023, with Apkalna as soloist. Inspired by the rich history of the organ, Sinfonia concertante combines powerful orchestral music with the unique sound of the organ. Fauré's Requiem differs from traditional requiems in its peaceful and comforting mood. Composed after the death of his parents, Fauré wanted to create a work that expresses faith in eternal rest and inner peace – without being strictly religious. The text is taken from the Catholic funeral liturgy, but adapted to give hope and comfort.
