Experience Johann Sebastian Bach’s magnificent St Matthew Passion – one of the Baroque era’s most monumental and moving works. In 2027, the 300th anniversary of its first performance in Leipzig on Good Friday, 11 April 1727, is commemorated.
St Matthew Passion is regarded as one of Bach’s greatest sacred works, combining soloists, choir and orchestra in a dramatic and deeply expressive account of the suffering and death of Jesus. Through the Evangelist’s narration, arias, chorales and powerful choral movements, Bach creates a musical whole in which drama and contemplation stand side by side.
The work contains some of Bach’s most intense musical moments – from the magnificent opening and closing choruses to the intimate arias and chorales. The music moves between sorrow, despair, hope and consolation, demonstrating Bach’s extraordinary ability to unite words and music.
