A concert of great musical breadth, from Richard Strauss’s poetic and melancholic Four Last Songs to Anton Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 8.
Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs are among the composer’s most moving works. With a rare combination of beauty, warmth and contemplation, the songs explore themes of nature, transience and the end of life. Soprano Elisabeth Teige takes centre stage, accompanied by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.
Following Strauss’s intimate and lyrical expression, the concert builds towards Bruckner’s magnificent Symphony No. 8. The work ranges from darkness and drama to majestic climaxes and long, meditative passages. This performance uses the 1890 version, Bruckner’s revised and final version of the symphony.
Andris Poga conducts the evening’s programme, which offers both Strauss’s finely nuanced vocal music and Bruckner’s monumental orchestral sound.
