Taxation is a necessary evil. But tax is also the price of civilisation. Today we ask: What does our tax system really look like? And how would we design it if we were starting from scratch?
To fund the welfare state, the government needs to raise revenue. The question is how to do so as efficiently as possible. More tax on consumption, less on work, and an end to the damn wealth tax?
And do economists’ theoretical models stand in the way of introducing a much simpler system? Or are it politicians and lawyers who make the whole thing unnecessarily complicated? How much politics can – and should – we pursue through the tax system?
Tax is undoubtedly part of the history of civilisation. In 2026, we must also ask: What will artificial intelligence mean for the tax system in the years ahead?
