Fugazi bassist Joe Lally was on stage in full flow when he felt the pieces finally fall into place. It was autumn 2021. The Messthetics – the instrumental trio with Lally on bass, former Fugazi colleague Brendan Canty on drums and guitarist Anthony Pirog – were playing at Bell House in Brooklyn and grinding out «Serpents Tongue». The final piece was the guest they had brought along: saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, who with his second appearance more or less redefined the band.
