Chamber music on a grand scale.
This Friday we get to experience the strings of Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme full of contrasts: from Wojciech Kilar's energetic and pulsating Orawa, via Anna Clyne's meditative Within Her Arms, to Tchaikovsky's musical memory from beautiful Florence — perhaps one of his best known ensemble works.
Where the programme's Polish opening work Orawa is full of folk music inspiration and rhythmic drive, British composer Anna Clyne's work is a meditation on loss and longing, dedicated to her mother who passed away suddenly the year before. The New Yorker writes that the music evokes memories of English Renaissance music and composers such as Thomas Tallis and John Dowland.
The concert rounds off with Tchaikovsky's popular chamber music work - his warm, romantic and lyrical memory from his stay in Florence in 1890.
