Zum Hauptinhalt

Kai Eide is a Norwegian diplomat and politician. Since the early 1970s, he has worked on international security policy and crisis management for Norway, the UN and NATO. Eide has served as Norway’s ambassador to the OSCE and NATO, as well as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Afghanistan. Drawing on his extensive international network in security policy, he also served as State Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister. Eide has published books about his experiences of the Balkan War and the war in Afghanistan. His latest book, Willingness for Peace – Diplomacy in Times of Crisis, covers the period from the golden age of détente to its collapse.

In his lecture, Eide will talk about his long career in diplomacy. His extensive experience of dialogue and negotiations offers an insight into the heart of conflicts and the negotiating table. He reflects on the role and importance of diplomacy and negotiations in world politics at a time of increasing polarisation and conflict. Eide asks what we can learn from our recent history in order to restore faith in the importance of diplomacy when faced with war and conflict.
