Vertavo was founded in 1984 by four young musicians in Hamar. The current members are Øyvor Volle (violin), Annabelle Meare (violin), Berit Cardas (viola) and Bjørg Lewis (cello). The quartet has been active for more than 40 years and is renowned for its intense musicality, warm sound and strong stage presence.
Vertavo achieved its international breakthrough in 1995 when it won first prize, the audience prize and the critics’ prize at the prestigious International Chamber Music Competition in Melbourne. The following year, the quartet won first prize at the Nordic Chamber Music Competition in Copenhagen.
Throughout its career, the quartet has toured worldwide, performing in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall and the Concertgebouw, and collaborating with leading musicians and festivals internationally. Its repertoire ranges from classical masterpieces to contemporary music, and the ensemble has received numerous awards, including the Grieg Prize, one of Norway’s most important cultural honors.
Vertavo also has an extensive discography of critically acclaimed recordings, including works by Grieg and Debussy, which have been awarded the Diapason d'Or.
