Vibeke Tandberg is one of Norway's most acclaimed contemporary artists, particularly recognized for her groundbreaking and staged photographic works, several of which are regarded as key pieces within postmodern conceptual photography.
The exhibition presents works spanning her entire career and will be the most extensive presentation of her oeuvre to date.
"They Live" marks a homecoming for Vibeke Tandberg (b.1967), who studied photography at the Department of Photography at Bergen Academy of Art and Design in the early 1990s.
Prior to this, Tandberg spent a short but important period studying theatre, and dramatisation through disguise and role-play became central to her artistic practice. She is considered a pioneer of digital photography as an art form, and is particularly well known for her series of manipulated photographs.
Tandberg is one of the leading representatives of postmodern conceptual photography both in Norway and internationally.
The exhibition links the theatricality of Tandberg's work with a scenography of its own, where works in a wide range of media – photography, film and video, sculpture and objects, text works and ephemera – will be presented, creating a space where Tandberg's exploration of identity and shifting personas can unfold. The exhibition will include well-known older works as well as new works, and will encompass Tandberg's artistic production over more than three decades.
"They Live" is part of Kode's series of overview exhibitions of artists with personal and professional ties to Bergen. The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive exhibition catalogue in English and Norwegian.
