Sogn Fjord Museum – A living image of fjord culture and boatbuilding traditions
Deep in the Sognefjord, by the Kaupanger ferry dock, you will find the Sogn Fjord Museum. Here the whole family can explore a unique collection of traditional Sogn boats, learn about the proud boatbuilding tradition in the region, and experience fjord culture up close.
In the museum, a converted sawmill, we have reconstructed an authentic boatbuilding workshop, where you learn how boats were built using handheld tools and traditional techniques. The museum offers insight into the fjord’s historical role as a food source and a means of transport, with exhibitions featuring fishing gear and other equipment linked to the rich fjord culture. The history of the Sogn people cannot be understood without placing the fjord itself and the culture surrounding its use at the centre.
The outdoor area also includes Sogn’s oldest tavern, Glaværstova, from the island Søre Glavær in Gulen.
