Historic boathouse with character
Juliabuda is a rustic and authentic boathouse from the 1860s, beautifully situated by the water’s edge in Haugsbygda on Gurskøya. Once a trading post and fisherman’s cabin, the house now offers accommodation for groups and families. You’ll be staying in a restored boathouse, with creaky floors, salt in the beams, and an atmosphere shaped by generations of life along the Norwegian coast.

Juliabuda is well suited for both small and larger groups, offering flexible layouts and space for both quiet retreat and shared moments. The boathouse consists of two apartments (total capacity: 14 beds if rented together), and can be rented either separately or as one unit. On the ground floor, there’s a large common area with views toward Stadt and the western islands – ideal for long-table dinners and social gatherings. The hosts are not always on site but ensure everything is well prepared for guests.

Juliabuda is idyllically located with dock access and evening sun – the perfect base for both relaxing days and active outings. Enjoy shrimp or crab on the pier, take the rowboat out (at your own risk), or prepare the day’s catch in the boathouse. On clear days, you can see all the way to Nordøyane, Stadt, and the Sunnmøre Alps from the island’s many peaks.
The surrounding area offers a wide range of activities – from hikes to Runde and Runde Lighthouse, mountain walks to Sandviktua and Veten, cave exploration in Dollsteinhola, family-friendly attractions like Hakkalegarden or the Adventure Trail by Gursken Church.
Central location in southern Sunnmøre
Juliabuda offers easy access to both natural highlights and local towns. You’re within driving distance of Runde bird island, Ulsteinvik, Fosnavåg, Ørsta, and Volda, and you can reach Ålesund by ferry or express boat from Hareid. Whether you’re travelling the Coastal Route (Kystriksvegen) or arriving from the east via Strynefjellsvegen, you’ll easily find your way to Gurskøya – a hidden gem between fjord and sea, where history meets ocean views and everyday peace.
