In 1983, the manager of the nursing home in Orkdal, Arnfinn Nesset, was convicted of 22 murders of patients. The case shocked the entire local community and became one of the most widely reported murder cases in Norway. Nesset initially confessed to the murders but retracted his confessions before the trial.
Simen Sætre has written the book The Unlikely Serial Killer about the case, a groundbreaking true crime account of the most talked-about murder case in Norway in the 1980s. Afterwards, Sætre told NRK that during his research he concluded the case should be reopened, and that it could be the largest miscarriage of justice in Norway. Arnfinn Nesset died on 2 December 2025.
