The Dream Poem – Norway’s greatest and most mythic vision poem – is a folk song and ballad consisting of around 50 verses. The poem tells the story of Olav Åsteson, who lay down to sleep on Christmas Eve and slept for thirteen days and nights. While he sleeps, he experiences powerful visions of the end of time and the journey of souls after death. When he wakes, he rides to the church to tell what he saw in his dreams. According to ancient belief, the soul had to make a long journey after death. Olav Åsteson made this journey while still alive.
