Grand Kyiv Ballet: Snødronningen

Kyiv Grand Ballet is pleased to present a unique ballet collaboration between choreographer Alexander Abdukarimov and Finnish composer Tuomas Kantelinen.

Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen is a timeless fairy tale about eternal love and friendship that overcomes even the greatest obstacles.

In this magical tale, a boy named Kai and a girl named Gerda live side by side. They are inseparable friends.

Kai’s grandmother tells the children about the Snow Queen, the powerful ruler of ice and snow. She also tells of an evil troll who created an enchanted mirror – a mirror that distorts everything it reflects. The good and beautiful become ugly and cold, while the evil is amplified.

One day the mirror shatters into a thousand pieces, and the tiny shards swirl in the wind. One of them finds its way to Kai’s eye, another to his heart. Suddenly he sees the world with a cold and distorted gaze – everything that was once beautiful now seems ugly. His heart, once filled with warmth and joy, freezes to ice. He is eventually lured away by the Snow Queen, who takes him to her icy castle.

Gerda, devastated by the loss of her best friend, sets out on a long and dangerous journey to find Kai and bring him home. She faces many challenges along the way – trolls, robbers, snowflakes, mysterious creatures and royalty – but she is not deterred.

Finally, she finds Kai in the Snow Queen’s castle, where the cold has rendered him numb. But Gerda never gives up. Her love and warm tears melt the ice in his heart and break the curse.

The Snow Queen is a magnificent and visually dazzling ballet that takes the audience on a magical journey through icy landscapes and fairy-tale worlds. With classical ballet, beautiful music and spectacular stage images, this is a performance that will enchant both young and old.
