Malin Pettersen’s creative force is an apparently inexhaustible source, and especially in recent years it has been bubbling over with frequent musical production – without the quantity affecting the quality. Quite the opposite: Pettersen demonstrates how enduring her music is, and that her songs suit multiple formats and expressions.
Wildflower can be seen as a summary of Pettersen’s solo career so far – all the knowledge, experience and, not least, musical power she has built up has gone into the final product. The album title hints at a connection to Wildhorse, Pettersen’s 2020 album, which cemented her status as the country’s leading Americana artist. Pettersen herself says:
“After going on musical adventures both geographically – in Nashville with Wildhorse – and in a figurative sense – with the genre-crossing Trouble Finding Words – we end up in a ‘full circle’ moment where everything I’ve learned, from my first days in the studio as a solo artist up until today, comes along. This album is about creating something intuitive, then and there, in the room. Bringing all the musical baggage you carry into the studio. Without overthinking or analyzing.”
Over the past couple of years, Pettersen has released a pop/R&B album, a fully acoustic stripped-down album, and a new album with her band Lucky Lips. Songwriting is her trademark: strong melodies that stick, combined with pointed and heartfelt lyrics. Pettersen shows deep social engagement, while her more introspective and personal songs feel universal and easy to relate to.
On Wildflower, Malin Pettersen is joined by musicians she has played with for a long time, who always get plenty of freedom in her projects. The band consists of: Øyvind Blomstrøm on bass, Nikolai Grasaasen on guitar/piano, Stian Jørgen Sveen on pedal steel, and Sigmund Vestrheim on drums. Pettersen has produced the album herself, and it clearly shines through that the group had a great time in the studio. The energy and joy of playing burst out of the speakers, ensuring that the music captivates from start to finish.
In autumn 2025 she brings the new album on tour – and everyone attending can look forward to experiencing one of the country’s best live artists with a band full of top-tier musicians.
Wildflower will be released on Die With Your Boots On Records on September 19, 2025.
