Experience history and explore the city’s past with the first monthly city walk of the year. Step back in time to the autumn of 1349, when the infamous Black Death struck Norway and changed the course of history. This brutal plague marked the beginning of an era that shaped the city’s fate and claimed the lives of around 60% of Stavanger’s population. Explore the grim consequences that followed this catastrophe and learn how the city plunged into deep crisis.

The city walk takes you through the city’s history, where the Black Death was not the only threat. In the early 1900s, the feared influenza epidemic, the “Spanish flu”, claimed over 14,000 lives in Norway. Did you know that Stavanger, in a desperate attempt to stop the epidemic, distributed half a bottle of cognac to every family in the usually temperate city? Join us to discover how vaccination became one of our most powerful defences against such diseases, and how the fight against illness continued through the centuries.

Explore the city walk Plague and Perdition and learn more about the history of diseases, their impact on society, and the importance of modern medicine in today’s world. Join the city walk for an educational and thought-provoking experience.
