The Norwegian Humanist Association returns with Stavangerske Verdier, where we invite different voices to discuss exciting themes.

The Sofa Writer is the solo project of Rolf Atle Kristoffersen, who uses his master’s degree in philosophy to share thought-provoking ideas tailored to our view of life here in Stavanger. He also holds a law degree and a bachelor’s in rhetoric (2021), and has long experience in sales.

Have you heard people say they don’t want to marry because they’re not Christians? How did marriage come to be seen by many non-religious people as a declaration of faith? Join us for a lecture followed by an open discussion.

  • Small group tasks
  • Plenary discussion
  • A conversation format with participants at the centre

The Church often equates marriage with Christianity. Yet marriage in Norway is not a religious confession but a legal institution – about property, inheritance, and rights. Many only discover this after years of cohabitation, when one partner passes away. Why has the Church succeeded in shaping marriage into what many perceive as a Christian institution? Together, we will explore the rhetoric that created this view.
