More than one hundred Norwegian authors were, or attempted to be, published in German under National Socialism, and during the war years Norwegian literature was the most translated foreign literature in Germany. Little has been discussed about this afterwards, and apart from Knut Hamsun and Trygve Gulbranssen, this literary export is almost unknown. What kind of literature was translated into German, what motivated Norwegian authors to publish under the Nazi dictatorship, and what were the costs?
Professor Narve Fulsås presents unique findings on, among others, Sigrid Undset, Johan Falkberget and Tarjei Vesaas from his new book Norwegian Literature in Nazi Germany (2025).
