1. Storehesten

Embark on a journey to the mountain peak Storehesten and enjoy the breathtaking 360-degree view of the dramatic landscape in Sunnfjord. This diverse mountain hike allows you to breathe in the fresh mountain air while admiring the majesty of Western Norway. Standing at an elevation of 1209 meters above sea level, Storehesten, also known as Kvamshesten, is the most prominent mountain in the area. From the top, you can gaze west to the sea, north to Ålfotbreen, east to Jostedalsbreen, and south to the mountains around Bergen. Throughout history, Storehesten has shaped daily life in Bygstad, from the Viking Age's beacon burning to today's activities like mountain climbing.

2. National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet

Explore the beautiful landscapes, winding serpentines, and charming stops along the National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet. This peaceful route offers an alternative experience to the main roads from Sunnfjord to Sogn. The road follows protected waterways and calm fjord arms. Gaularfjellet, a well-preserved gem, winds along the rivers before ascending to the mountain's highest point. At the Utsikten viewpoint, you can enjoy the view of a lush and beautiful landscape as the road winds up the slope.

3. Waterfall path (Fossestien)

Walk along the Waterfall path, a scenic hiking path through lush forests and past magnificent waterfalls. Experience the sound of flowing water and enjoy the diverse natural landscape on this beautiful trail. The trail stretches from Gaularfjellet to Viksdalen, covering 21 km with a height difference of 500 meters. It takes you past 14 waterfalls and 7 lakes. Following old paths carved out by animals and humans, this trail provides a unique experience of the Gaular watercourse, which was permanently protected in 1993 after a prolonged battle.

4. Likholefossen

Visit Likholefossen, an impressive waterfall that powerfully cascades down, creating a spectacular sight. Take your time to absorb the atmosphere and marvel at the power and beauty of nature. A walk across the agile steel bridge over Likholefossen brings you up close to the force of the waterfall. Continue the journey along the Waterfall path and experience the protected watercourse up close.

5. Osfossen

Explore Osfossen, another beautiful waterfall in Gaular. Let yourself be enchanted by the water's dance and feel the soothing effect of nature's own symphony. Osfossen, easily accessible via County Road 57 in Sunnfjord municipality, is among the most well-known waterfalls in the Gaular watercourse. The Osen Bridge crosses the waterfall, marking the last waterfall before the Gaula River flows into Dalsfjorden.

6. Hestad Chapel

Take a detour to the charming Hestad Chapel and experience the tranquility of this beautiful chapel. Placed in an idyllic landscape, this location offers you the opportunity for contemplation and relaxation. Built-in 1805, Hestad Chapel stands on a narrow peninsula that separates Viksdalsvatnet from Hestadfjorden. If you travel along the National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet, be sure to stop for a tour and perhaps a refreshing swim in the idyllic Hestadfjorden.

7. Fishing

For those who love fishing, salmon fishing in Gaular's fresh rivers is an experience in itself. Dive into nature's own water kingdom and experience the thrill of trying to catch the magnificent fish. Gaula, the main river in the Gaular watercourse in Sunnfjord, is one of the largest salmon-bearing rivers in Western Norway. The traditions of salmon fishing under Osfossen date back centuries, and the fishing area is known as one of Norway's best. Here, you are offered well-organized and easily accessible salmon fishing, from exclusive fishing under Osfossen to excellent fly-fishing areas in the middle and upper parts of the river. Fishing in Gaula provides a nature experience in the lush and beautiful landscape, with the river alternating between rapids, calm stretches, and impressive waterfalls.

8. Storefjellet

Experience nature's peak on the trip to Storefjellet, which, at 1182 meters above sea level, offers a fantastic view in all directions. Start the journey near Flatheim with a homemade packed lunch and good shoes. The 7-kilometer-long trail offers varied terrain. The landscape unfolds from 650 meters above sea level, with a view towards Gaularfjellet, Melsnipa, and the mountains in Sogn to the east. At the top, you are rewarded with a 360-degree view, including the highest mountain in Gaular municipality, Geitebotsfjellet, at 1354 meters above sea level, in the south.

9. Biking

Explore Gaular's magnificent nature on two wheels by taking a cycling tour through the area. Cycling tours give you the freedom to explore at your own pace, and you can enjoy the varied landscape in a unique way. Head towards the top of Gaularfjellet and the Utsikten viewpoint. Feel free to stop along the way to admire the mountain lakes and waterfalls. Perhaps even take a refreshing dip? Another recommended tour is the tour around Hestadfjorden, which is approximately 13 km. It is popular among both recreational cyclists and active bikers. During the summer months, there is steady traffic of cyclists around the lake.

10. Day Trip Cabin in Gaular: Skaraly

Plan a day trip to the Skaraly cabin. Enjoy a picnic in the beautiful surroundings, relax, and take in nature up close. The day trip cabin, located at Kårstadskaret at approximately 700 meters above sea level, is perfect for a trip on its own or as a short or longer stop on the way to Storefjellet. Here, you get a fantastic view of Dalsfjorden, Storehesten, and the Sunnfjord mountains. It's also great to swim in small ponds around the cabin or relax in the sunshine and enjoy the view.
