The Sustainable Destination Label

FjordKysten and Sunnfjord are part of the national Sustainable Destination certification program. The label does not mean that the destinations are 100% sustainable, but that they are systematically working on sustainable destination development. Improvements must be documented every three years. The program has achieved "GSTC-recognized status," awarded by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

Visit Fjordkysten and Sunnfjord is certified as an Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn), symbolizing our commitment to sustainable practices and eco-friendly tourism. This milestone underscores our leadership in promoting sustainable practices in our region.

In addition, destination management implements measures that inform, support, and encourage increased sustainability and environmental certifications.

The Resident Survey

In the autumn of 2024, Visit Fjordkysten and Sunnfjord conducted a resident survey to map the experiences and attitudes of the local population towards tourism in the region.

The survey has helped us identify both the positive impacts and challenges tourism brings, providing us with guidance for making necessary adjustments.

Some key findings from the survey:

  • Visitor Management: It's crucial to ensure proper management in popular areas to reduce negative impacts.
  • Regulation of Visitor Volume: Especially during peak seasons and at popular attractions, to prevent overcrowding.
  • Infrastructure Development: Improvements in sanitary facilities, parking, and waste disposal stations.
  • Nature Preservation: Facilitating and protecting nature, and informing tourists about responsible behavior.
