This round trip departs from Hellesylt ferry quay and takes you along the full length of the famous Geirangerfjord, part of the West Norwegian Fjords – Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fjord is around 15 kilometres long, reaches depths of nearly 600 metres, and is flanked by mountains rising to more than 1,600 metres above sea level.
The waterfalls and fjord farms
The Geirangerfjord is known for its waterfalls and the old fjord farms clinging to the mountainsides, settlements where it's hard to imagine how anyone managed to live. Along the way you pass well-known waterfalls such as De Syv Søstre (The Seven Sisters), Brudesløret (The Bridal Veil) and Friaren (The Suitor). According to local folklore, Friaren was a tireless admirer of the Seven Sisters on the opposite side of the fjord, while Brudesløret is often seen as the happy ending to the story. High above the fjord lie the abandoned farms of Skageflå (250 metres above sea level), Knivsflå (259 metres) and Horvadrag (240 metres), some of them settled as far back as the Viking Age.
About the fjord cruise
The boat trip is run aboard the fast ferry MS Keiser Wilhelm, which has both a sun deck and a spacious lounge. Along the way you can keep an eye out for birdlife, and you might spot a white-tailed eagle. The fjord cruise can also be booked as a one-way trip from Hellesylt to Geiranger, if you'd rather not return the same way.
