Måøya lies along Skjærgårdsveien (the archipelago road), the narrow coastal road that winds over bridges and skerries between Smøla and the fishing village of Veiholmen, a couple of minutes' drive from Hopen town centre. The walk is an easy loop of about 3.7 kilometres, though you can also just walk out to the trail post and back the same way, a distance of around 2.5 kilometres. The first stretch is on tarmac, before the path takes over for the rest of the way.
The walk suits both children and adults, whether you fancy a gentle stroll or a slightly longer jog. Along the way you're treated to sea and sky for much of the route, with fine views along the coast. Smøla is known for its rich birdlife, so keep an eye out for seabirds as you go.
At the trail post you'll find a bench where you can sit down with a packed lunch, or simply take in the view out to sea. The walk is best done from spring to autumn.
The path is maintained by the Hopen Sanitetsforening (a local voluntary health association) and villagers from Hopen, who volunteer their time to clear and look after the trail area.
