Until the Reformation in 1537, Nidaros was the most important pilgrimage destination in Northern Europe. Pilgrims from Norway and abroad travelled along the coastal route to Nidaros, where the relics of St Olav were kept. As early as 1075, Nidaros was mentioned as a destination for pilgrims. A pilgrimage along the Norwegian coast could involve several stops along the way, and the journey itself could be perilous, with harsh weather and the threat of pirates.
Today, the Coastal pilgrimage route offers a deeper understanding of the cultural, historical and religious significance of the pilgrimage tradition. It is a journey where you can discover coastal history, cultural heritage sites and church history, while also developing a greater awareness of the environment and encouraging physical activity and well-being.
