Nupatinden is on Sande and rises to 242 metres above sea level. The hike passes over Storehornet (271 metres) and covers around seven kilometres there and back, with about 300 metres of ascent. You should allow two to three hours, and the terrain is easy to moderate, with good waymarking throughout.
From the summit you get fine views over the islands in outer Sande, towards the Gurskefjord and the Hallefjord, and out across the open sea. Larsnes IL, the local sports club, has a trim-post (checkpoint) at the top.
Getting there
The starting point is at the highest point of the Drageskaret mountain pass, along county road 61 between Gursken and Larsnes. There's good parking here.
Route description
The path starts on the west side of the road and heads west, first crossing a few bogs. From there it follows the ridge out to the summit of Storehornet, before descending steeply and continuing along the highest ridge westward to Nupatinden. The path is good, though it can be wet across the bogs in rainy weather.
Bird sanctuary in Sunnmøre
Nupatinden is a bird sanctuary. From 1 May to 31 July, it's only permitted to walk the marked path out to the summit, and you may not leave the path during this period. Outside the nesting season the hike is open all year round, and in winter you can also do it on skis.
