A unique cultural heritage site by the Storfjord
The Rose Church in Stordal, officially called Stordal Old Church, was built in 1789 and is now a protected cultural heritage site. The church is known as one of Norway’s most beautifully rose-painted wooden churches, with walls, pillars and galleries covered in colourful motifs. Here, biblical scenes stand side by side with folk art and symbols reflecting the local people’s faith and way of life over 200 years ago.
Rose painting and folk art in Sunnmøre
The entire interior was decorated by Ola Hermundsson Berge, one of the leading folk artists of the 18th century. The decorations are a rare example of how rose painting was used in churches, showcasing both artistic craftsmanship and storytelling tradition. A visit to the Rose Church is like stepping into a living museum – the paintings remain just as they were when people once gathered here for worship.
A perfect stop on the way to Geiranger, Valldal and Trollstigen
The Rose Church is idyllically located in the village of Stordal in Sunnmøre, just a short distance from the Storfjord – and easily accessible if you’re travelling between attractions like Geiranger, Valldal and Trollstigen. The church is open for guided tours, often led by local guides who share stories and interpretations of the art on the walls. Combine your visit with a stop at the Stordal Rural Museum, a coffee break in the village, or nature experiences along the fjord and surrounding mountains.
The Rose Church is owned by a local association that maintains the building and keeps it open to visitors throughout the summer season – all to give you a glimpse into a very special piece of Norwegian cultural heritage.
